Sub Antarctic Campbell Island

Although the permanent station is now closed and most scientific expeditions
are restricted to a few weeks or months over the summer, oppurtunites
still exist for individuals to visit Campbell aboard a few tourist ships
that visit the Sub Antarctic Islands, including the Auckland Islands.
Norm Judd who has been researching Campbell Island history for thirty years
now, went to Campbell in January 2007 to check out a site which could be the
remains of the 'Perserverance', the only known shipwreck at Campbell,
although it's location is not known, or a completely unknown shipwreck.
This came up after Norm saw some photos of possible wreckage from a 1971/72
Campbell Island crew member. The wreckage was located on the January trip
and some wood samples taken for analysis. We'll keep you up to date.
Norm says the island is now looking great after the rat eradication a few years
ago and the discovery of the Campbell Island Snipe and the reintroduction of the
Campbell Island Flightless Teal, which are both back on the main island again.
The 200th Anniversary of the discovery of Campbell Island occurs this year and
an expedition is being organised to go to Campbell at the end of the year.
