Description:
Ian Bradley was 15 years old when he joined the navy. Twenty seven years later, after
what some have described as a brilliant career, he was relieved of his command without
warning or explanation. His book follows his career from Cadet Midshipman to his final
disgrace, his battle to clear his name, and his subsequent career in politics and industry.
Captain Bradley served in ships of three different navies, went to Antarctic under sail
and served HM The Queen Mother onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. In 1962 he won
the coveted Ogilvy Medal for topping the RN's Long Torpedo and Antisubmarine course.
As a navy diver he dived on the Wahine and in the sub Antarctic islands. He escorted
the nuclear submarine Pintado into harbour.
A controversial figure, his removal from command fuelled speculation that the naval
hierarchy could not cope with the almost inevitable probability that he would become the
Chief of Defence Force. The book includes exerpts from his Reports of Proceedings from
his time in Command and Court records. The book details his attempts to discover the
reason for the actions taken against him and the navy's extraordinary attempts at
character assassination.
The story involves three Governers General, a former Prime Minister, and a raft of
characters whose determination to deny him justice cost the taxpayers an estimated
one million dollars. Notwithstanding the treatment he received from the establishment,
public support has not wavered so that today he chairs the Auckland Regional Council's
powerful Strategic Policy Committee, works in Community Relations at the Department
of Conservation and is Chairman of a group of companies with manufacturing plants in
both New Zealand and Australia. He is one of New Zealand's older triathletes with five
Ironman finishes to date.
His exploits as Captain of HMNZS Waikato are the stuff of legend and placed him in the
public eye, a position he holds to this day, in the wake of the controversy over the
Auckland Regional Council's rating policy. He sees his book as his last opportunity to
get justice, while at the same time he hopes that it will entertain and enlighten the reader.
